Visit from Bransgore Primary School Hedgerow Heroes

Children who visited the site are now ‘Hedgerow Heroes’ for Bransgore Primary School.

Using the CPRE ‘Rough Guide Around the Hedges’ to identify plant species.

There was lots of interest and questions to be answered. Here, the Countryside Manager on Meyrick Estate asks one of the Bransgore pupils if he knows any species of bats. The immediate answer was: “Well, there’s the Brown Long-eared Bat, the Common Pipistrelle, Greater Horseshoe Bat, the Lesser Horseshoe Bat … and that’s only the ones in England!” In our bat surveys we have so far found both the Common Pipistrelle and the Noctule Bat.

The children were tasked with drawing a hedgerow, what animals they might find it in and what food they might eat.

They were careful to record their observations.

Each ‘Hedgerow Hero’ received a copy of ‘The Happy Hedgerow’ book.
