Beautiful Hampshire bluebells bloom

By

CPRE Hampshire’s first countryside event of the year was a Bluebell Walk in Ellisfield, North Hampshire.

The event took place on Saturday 22nd April and was organised by the CPRE Hampshire North Hampshire District Group.

We are fortunate in Hampshire to have some of the most established sites in the British Isles to enjoy these precious plants. Bluebells are native to the mild, damp climate of Western Europe and the UK is home to almost half of the world’s bluebell population. In late March and April, blankets of bluebell can be seen carpeting the floors of ancient woodlands in Hampshire. Right on our doorstep.

Bluebell colonies can take years to develop, the bulbs spend most of the year hidden underground and it can take several years for the plant to emerge. These special habitats are protected by law. However, tempting it is, it is prohibited to pick these wildflowers, dig up the bulbs or sell the plants on. Instead enjoy them in their natural habitat and leave them to the bumblebees!

The event was well attended, the weather was perfect and everyone seemed to have a lovely time. Well done to our North Hampshire District Group Chair, Hannah Houstin-Lacey, and her team of volunteers for organising this event.
